There is a long standing argument in AA that if you are sober then you should not be taking any mood changing pills, or other prescription pills. I remember long ago, several times of course, that I had been in the center of heated argument over my sobriety seeing that I take handfuls of pills every day.
Pills are a necessary evil when you are sick. But if you are abusing them, then you are USING. Hubby takes a hand full of pills every day for his bi-polar disorder and that is necessary treatment, that does not impinge on his sobriety or mine. Although in the past he has had issues with certain things that harmed him but the moderation of his medication took care of that little problem.
There is depression, sleeping disorders and many other “Pill” necessary problems that must be met by using prescription pills. The world revolves around the almighty pill bottle. And many sober people have issues with the use of pills and to what extent you use them. If treatment becomes addiction then you must seek medical advice as to moderate that use, to change that addiction and to help you find proper solutions to getting back on track.
THE PAST is the PAST. It only bothers you if you allow it to. Past history is useless if you remember that WE have the POWER to break the cycle of abuse, addiction and depression. Just because our parents were alcoholics doesn’t mean we have to follow in their destructive paths. We are all adults and we should know better, sometimes we need a swift kick in the ass to remind us of that fact.
They say that if you are “Using” then you are “USING!” Sobriety dates come and go, and there are many people, like myself who say that if you are using harmfully or addictively, then you loose your sobriety date. If you have gotten to the point where you are powerless over pills and that your life has become unmanageable then you sure as shit are not sober are you? Pills are the bane of sober people’s issues. I have seen many people fall off the wagon because of pills.
This is where we practice the slogans:
We are powerless over people, places and things
Stay in your day
Live in the moment
Easy does it
And This Too Shall Pass…
Our book is meant to be suggestive only. We realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answers will come, if your own house is in order. But obviously you cannot transmit something you haven’t got. See to it that your relationship with Him is right, and great events will come to pass for you and countless others. This is the Great Fact for us.
Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny.
May God bless you and keep you—until then.
